Two Patients. Two Different Outcomes. One Powerful Reminder: Early Detection Saves Lives

A reflection on why listening to your body—and seeking timely medical evaluation—can make all the difference.
Every day at China Spring Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Clinic, patients come to us seeking relief from pain, fatigue, digestive discomfort, and many other health concerns through acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Our role, however, extends beyond providing treatment. Responsible patient care also means recognizing when symptoms or physical findings may indicate something more serious
and ensuring that patients receive appropriate medical evaluation as quickly as possible.
Recently, two patients reminded us just how important that responsibility is. Their stories had very different outcomes, but they shared one powerful lesson:
Never ignore your body's warning signs, and never underestimate the value of routine health screenings.
Case 1: A Referral That Changed Everything
A woman in her early 60s came to our clinic complaining of constipation, mild abdominal discomfort, and a general feeling of not being well. She hoped that acupuncture or herbal medicine might help relieve her symptoms.
During her initial consultation and physical examination, Dr. Yan noted abnormal abdominal findings that warranted further medical evaluation. Rather than beginning acupuncture treatment, she recommended that the patient seek immediate medical assessment and undergo advanced imaging studies.
The imaging studies confirmed the presence of abdominal tumors. The patient later underwent surgery, and the pathology results revealed abdominal lymphoma.
Fortunately, the disease was identified before it had spread extensively. After surgery and appropriate medical treatment, follow-up examinations showed no evidence of disease (NED).
Today, she is cancer-free.
Learning that she received timely treatment and achieved such a positive outcome was incredibly rewarding for our entire team.
Case 2: When Time Was No Longer on Our Side
A 64-year-old man visited our clinic because he had been experiencing profound fatigue and a persistent feeling of being unwell. He hoped that acupuncture and herbal medicine might help restore his energy.
During the examination, Dr. Yan identified abnormal physical findings that raised immediate concern for a potentially serious underlying medical condition. Rather than initiating treatment, she advised him to seek urgent evaluation at the Emergency Department.
Further testing at the hospital confirmed a diagnosis of advanced liver cancer.
Sadly, by the time the disease was discovered, it had already progressed to a stage where curative surgery was no longer possible, and treatment options were extremely limited.
This was heartbreaking news for the patient, his family, and everyone involved in his care.
One Important Similarity
Although these two patients experienced very different outcomes, they had one important thing in common:
Neither had received routine medical check-ups or age-appropriate health screenings for many years.
This situation is more common than many people realize.
People often assume that symptoms such as fatigue, constipation, abdominal discomfort, bloating, or loss of appetite are simply part of getting older, stress, or everyday life.
Unfortunately, many serious illnesses—including certain cancers—can develop silently for months or even years before obvious symptoms appear.
By the time symptoms become severe, valuable opportunities for early diagnosis and treatment may already have been lost.
Why Clinical Experience Matters
Dr. Yan has extensive training in both Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Prior to establishing China Spring Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Clinic, she trained and worked in oncology, gaining valuable experience caring for patients with cancer and recognizing the warning signs of serious disease.
This background allows her to evaluate patients from both an Eastern and Western medical perspective.
At our clinic, patient safety always comes first.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine can be valuable therapies for managing pain, improving function, supporting recovery, and enhancing overall well-being. However, when a patient's symptoms or examination findings suggest a potentially serious medical condition, our priority is to ensure that they receive appropriate diagnostic testing and specialist evaluation without delay.
Sometimes, the Best Treatment Begins with the Right Referral
At China Spring Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Clinic, we believe that compassionate care means more than providing treatment.
It means listening carefully.
It means recognizing when something doesn't seem right.
And sometimes, it means helping patients get the medical care they need as quickly as possible.
A Message to Our Community
Your body has an incredible way of telling you when something isn't right.
Persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, or a new lump should never be ignored.
Even if you feel healthy, routine physical examinations and age-appropriate health screenings remain among the most effective tools we have for detecting serious illnesses early—often before symptoms become obvious.
Early detection doesn't simply improve treatment options.
It saves lives.
At China Spring Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Clinic, we are committed to caring for our patients with compassion, honesty, and professionalism. Whether through acupuncture, herbal medicine, or recognizing when additional medical evaluation is needed, our goal is always the same:
To help every patient achieve the best possible health outcome.
